FSP Twinkle 65 Slim Universal Notebook Adapter Review @ ModSynergy.com
By: Michael Phrakaysone

So the scenario presents itself that you require a replacement notebook power adapter, what do you do?  Whatever the reason may be that you need a replacement, it could be that the original adapter suddenly died, or has a frayed cable end, ultimately you want something that is just as reliable and safe as the original.  What I advise you not to do is to purchase a cheap Chinese aftermarket power adapter from eBay or in general.

There's a huge difference in power adapters made by a Chinese company to whatever little standard they have, and that of a power adapter engineered by a major name brand and then made in China conforming to their specifications and passing international safety regulations worldwide.  The inexpensive Chinese made aftermarket power adapters don't pass these international safety tests and can be very dangerous posing a fire, explosion, and electrocution risk.  They are poorly engineered, have poor efficiency, use low grade components, and they are poorly put together.  There have been numerous documented horror stories of people having used these adapters and suffering injuries and even death.  It's best to research first and spend your hard earned money on a well known brand name either from the notebook manufacture or from a company that is well known making their own power supplies in general.

Today I will be reviewing an interesting universal power supply made from a well known power supply maker FSP Group.  FSP Group manufactures (themselves and for others) power supply units for the PC since 1993 and are the 5th largest power supply vendor in the world.  FSP Group makes power supply units for companies such as OCZ, Silverstone, Antec, Sparkle Power, Thermaltake, and much more.

The FSP Twinkle 65 Universal Notebook Adapter I am reviewing today is advertised as the smallest and lightest 65-Watt notebook power adapter on the market today making it a unique option to have because it'll help unload the weight from your notebook bag when travelling.  Supporting 99.9% of all 19v notebooks on the market, we'll see what else the Twinkle 65 can offer you and how it performs.

FSP Twinkle 65

First Impressions & Usage

The FSP Twinkle 65 universal notebook adapter comes packaged in a nice light green accented corrugated box with a plastic front window putting the adapter on display.  You notice how compact the FSP Twinkle 65 really is; smaller than a credit card!

FSP Group

We're told from information on the packaging that the Twinkle 65 comes with an exchangeable wall  plug, one for use in North America, and the other for International usage.  We're told that FSP Twinkle 65 supports all major brands of notebooks on the market today such as Acer, Asus, Compaq, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, LG, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, and other notebooks using such connector plugs, 8 of them being included.  Rounding out the front is indication that FSP Twinkle 65 comes with a 3-year warranty which is always nice to have than the standard 1-year most other electronics come with.

FSP Twinkle

On the side of the box we're told that the FSP Twinkle 65 universal notebook adapter is of the wall-mount design so it's not like the standard one that came with your notebook.  Those have wires coming out from each end making it disorganized by the length of the wires just looking like spaghetti.  The Twinkle 65 is going to offer you saved space and less wires to deal with.  Included is a travel pouch to protect your adapter and give it that extra organization and protection from scratching the charger and notebook itself.  Lastly we're told that the FSP Twinkle 65 is engineered to run very efficiently with up to 91% efficiency (level V efficiency) making it consume only the power it needs and keeping it cooler in the process.  I like the sound of that.

Turning the box over we are presented with more information regarding tip compatibility for each specific brand name, given features and specifications, safety regulations and approvals, and given a note that this universal notebook adapter can power up notebooks, but in some cases due to proprietary designs (points out Dell) may not be able to charge the battery.  This behavior isn't isolated to the FSP Twinkle 65 universal notebook adapter, all other universal power adapters exhibit this same behavior as some Dell notebooks contain a proprietary wire in the charger that is picked up by the notebook in order for the system to charge.  Dell is basically doing this to ensure its customers buy another Dell AC adapter, which makes sense for Dell.

Sliding out the FSP Twinkle 65 from the box we find all the included items and accessories that include...

  • FSP Twinkle 65 universal notebook adapter
  • Drawstring Travel Pouch
  • 8 Connector Tips
  • 2 Exchangeable Wall Plugs (North America/International)
  • Users Manual

Power Supply

So you know how the front of the box mentions that the FSP Twinkle 65 weighs only 100g making it the smallest and lightest 65-watt notebook power adapter on the market?  Well that's technically true, but isn't what you'll end up having when it's all put together.  They point out 100g basically for marketing purposes as the user's manual points out that the notebook adapter itself weighs 100g, however, the DC cable adds another 50g. But when I weighed it on my digital scale, it tipped in at a grand total of 163g.  Why that happened is because they didn't account for the Velcro strap, warning sticker, and exchangeable wall plug.  But even still, 163g is significantly lighter than all other standard chargers out there provided by the notebook manufacture and even better there's less cabling to sort out as well.  For example, my Samsung notebook adapter weighs in at 292g and that's just for a small Netbook.  Standard size notebook adapters can vary up to 500g and then some.  I think the best argument for why the FSP Twinkle 65 presents such an upgrade is the physical size, its half or in some cases more than half the size of regular notebook chargers

FSP bundles a nice quality compact fabric drawstring travel pouch with the Twinkle 65 so it makes travelling easy, protects not only the adapter, but also the notebook from potential scratches under transport.

FSP Twinkle 65 universal notebook adapter comes with 8 tip connectors bundled in a neat compact plastic mold insert and are color coded for easy use.  On the back of the box there is a compatibility list which tells what you color tip works with what notebook manufacture.  So I have a Samsung Netbook so I would use the orange tip connector, or I have an HP notebook and would use the white connector.

FSP Group makes power supplies for worldwide use in applications such as PC, medical, industrial server, and therefore has engineered the Twinkle 65 to a strict standard in safety protections that include patented input fuse protection, short circuit protection, over current protection, over voltage protection, over temperature protection, and has a ripple noise reduction circuit.  It's passed global safety tests has approvals from Germany, Russia, Europe, US & Canada, and China (TUV /GS , FCC, CE, CB , UL /cUL , BSMI , GOST).

FSP

FSP Twinkle 65 universal notebook adapter measures approximately 2.8 x 1.9 x 0.9 making it extremely compact, even smaller than the size of a credit card in both length and height!  This makes a world of difference in comparison to lugging around a standard notebook power adapter that comes with your system.  You don't have a brick to carry around and you don't have any of the mess that is the wires coming out from both ends.  With the Twinkle 65, FSP Group designed it to be wall mountable so there's no more of having your notebook power adapter lying across the floor getting scratched, tangled, and possibility of being tripped on.   Cable length you have access to with the Twinkle 65 is about 2.5 meters from the bottom of the adapter to the end of the connector tip, to me this is plenty long enough.

FSP Twinkle 65 DC output is rated for 65 watts maximum or 19V / 3.43A.

FSP

Using the FSP Twinkle 65 is a simple process.  Simply slide and lock whatever plug fits in your country and then find and insert which ever connector tip that will fit into your notebook.  The connector tips have indications of - and + on them but they only fit one way so there's no possibility of inserting them incorrectly.  These go on snug so you need to push down on them for a secure fit.

FSP

In my test of the FSP Twinkle 65, I ran it for a full hour recharging my Samsung Netbook with an old Atom N450 processor and I recorded with my digital IR thermometer that the Twinkle 65 never heated up past 40 degrees Celsius.  The same could not be said for the OEM Samsung charger which recorded a high of 56 degrees Celsius and was much hotter to the touch.  The FSP Twinkle 65 always performed cooler to the touch than the OEM notebook adapter and was between 15-20 degrees cooler.

FSP

On some other devices I tested the FSP Twinkle 65 with, they worked without any trouble aside from me having to select the correct connector tip.  I was able to power a Zotac Mini PC, an older HP laptop, and aside from notebooks, I was able to use the Twinkle 65 as a power supply to power my Class D amplifier.  You can use the FSP Twinkle 65 for many applications aside from notebook use.

Conclusion

The FSP Twinkle 65 made a great impression and I was pleased to see that its very affordable and can be found for between $40 - $50 making it a viable option for those of you who need a replacement notebook power supply, or want to save some space in your notebook bag while travelling.  I would consider the Twinkle 65 a very nice upgrade and its biggest attribute is its compact size making it smaller than a credit card.  The decision from FSP to make the Twinkle 65 of the wall mountable variety further enhances the product by not having to worry about it laying on the ground, laying on some soft surface like a bed that willmake it become even hotter, getting scratched up, and being tripped on.

In all of the devices I tried the FSP Twinkle 65 with, I had zero issues and the connector tips were the correct size for each application.  If you are in the market for an adapter such as the FSP Twinkle 65, I ask that you look in our photo gallery to see if the connector you need is included with this product.  If your notebook happens to fall under the 0.1% of devices not compatible with the Twinkle 65, then unfortunately you will have to look elsewhere.  But all in all, the FSP Twinkle 65 Universal Notebook Adapter earns our highest award and is highly recommended.
